Cheap & Cheerful: Siam Noodles

What’s your latest cheap and cheerful discovery? 

Siam Noodles, in Causeway Bay—it’s opposite Passion by Gerard Dubois.

What kind of food do they serve? 

I only know of two small eateries in Hong Kong that serve the traditional rice soup—this is one of them. The chef is Thai. They have a very small menu, but that way you can mix and match tastes. 

What do you recommend ordering?

Along with the Thai rice soup, the cheese wontons are really, really good. You can dip them in the sweet-and-sour sauce that Thai cooking is famous for. My favorite drink is butterfly pea tea. It helps the body deal with stressors as it has a calming effect on the body and mind. 

When is the best time to go? 

It’s crowded around midday and you might have to share a table. If I’m in the area during tea time, between 2:30–6pm (last order around 5:45pm), then I’ll go for the specials. If you want a quiet spot à deux, it’s also a good place and you can drop in. It’s good with a group of friends—the large tables can sit four quite comfortably. The staff are all super nice and they play Thai music!
