On the afternoon of August 11, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to a fire at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), which is currently closed for refurbishment. The SCDF told Channel News Asia that the fire involved construction materials on site.
No injuries were reported and the neighboring buildings appeared unaffected by the incident. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
Since 2017, SAM has been undergoing a USD 90 million renovation. The revamped museum will include expanded galleries to accommodate large-scale artworks, as well as a bridge connecting the historic building to 8Q, SAM’s venue across the street. Refurbishment is expected to reach completion in 2021.
