Multimedia artist Haegue Yang is the recipient of the 2018 Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award (Presidential Citation) in the visual arts category. Seoul and Busan-based Kukje Gallery, which represents the artist, made the announcement in a press release dated October 17. Awardees are chosen by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for their outstanding cultural contributions in fields including literature, music, theater and dance. The award ceremony will take place on October 24 at Seoul’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA).

Yang is known for her innovative practice, which spans paper collages, videos, installations and sculptures. Her immersive artworks have been recognized for their engagement with contemporary questions of isolation, ambiguous identities, otherness and socioeconomic transformation.

This April, as the winner of the 2018 Wolfgang Hahn Prize, Yang opened her first major mid-career survey, “ETA 1994–2018,” at Cologne’s Museum Ludwig, which grants the annual award.

The artist’s works have been shown around the world, with solo exhibitions at major contemporary art institutions including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2009); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2012); Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul (2015); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2015); and Centre Pompidou, Paris (2016). Currently, Yang has a solo exhibition titled “Chronotopic Traverses” at La Panacée, Montpellier, which is on view through January 13, 2019.
