On March 27, the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) in Brisbane announced the appointment of Liz Nowell as its new director.

An experienced curator, Nowell joins the IMA from Adelaide-based nonprofit art space ACE Open, where she has served as the chief executive officer since its establishment in 2017. In her previous role as executive director of the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia (CACSA), Nowell oversaw the merger between CACSA and The Australian Experimental Art Foundation that created ACE Open. From 2010 to 2015, Nowell worked as an independent curator, writer, and educator in Sydney and New York, holding curatorial posts at the 2014 edition of Sydney’s SafARI festival, and at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre.

Nowell succeeds IMA co-directors Aileen Burns and Johan Lund, who left the Brisbane institution to helm the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth, New Zealand. Nowell commented on her appointment: “The IMA is an organization I have long admired, and I am thrilled to be appointed its next director. Its reputation for presenting exemplary art from around the world is second to none, and I look forward to building on this impressive track record.”

Nowell will commence her role at the IMA in mid-June.
