The year 2015 has seen some major curatorial reshuffling among Australia’s art professionals. Before December gives way to 2016, Melbourne’s Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) has announced its appointment of Max Delany—senior curator of contemporary art at National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)—as its new artistic director. Delany will be filling the position that had been occupied for the past 13 years by Juliana Engberg, who relocated to Europe in April to become program director for the European Capital of Culture in Aarhus, Denmark.
Previous tenures for Delany have included directorial positions at the Monash Museum of Art and Gertrude Contemporary, as well as a curatorship at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, all in Melbourne. His projects at NGV have included a solo presentation of British artist David Shrigley in 2014 and, most recently, the blockbuster summer show “Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei,” which drew high praise from the Chinese dissident artist himself.
Delany will leave his position at NGV in January 2016 and assume his role at ACCA the following month.
