On April 26, Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) announced the initial roster of artists who will be featured in Sharjah Biennial 14. The list includes 23 established and emerging artists from all around the globe.
Scheduled to open in March 2019 under the title “Leaving the Echo Chamber,” the biennial will comprise three distinct exhibitions that will include newly commissioned works, large-scale public installations, performances, and films, and will take on an investigation of the echo chamber of information in contemporary society, as facilitated by rapid technological change.
“Journey Beyond the Arrow,” curated by Zoe Butt, will reveal how the meanings of traditions and customs have shifted as a result of colonial exploitation, religious conflicts, and ideological extremism. Works by artists from the Asia-Pacific region, including Khadim Ali, Meiro Koizumi, Nalini Malani, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, Ho Tzu Nyen, Ahmad Fuad Osman, Lisa Reihana, and Kidlat Tahimik will be featured in this showcase.
Omar Kholeif will curate “Making New Time.” Bringing together a diverse group of practitioners including Huguette Caland, Lubaina Himid, Barbara Kasten, Marwan, Otobong Nkanga, Jon Rafman, and Akram Zaatari, the show will reimagine material culture, and explore how cultural narratives are created and deconstructed over time.
“Look for Me All Around You,” curated by Claire Tancons, will examine the phenomena of dispossession and diaspora, and will feature works by Caline Aoun, Aline Baiana, Nikolaus Gansterer, Eisa Jocson, Isabel Lewis, Ulrik López, Carlos Martiel, and Wu Tsang.
The total number of participating artists has yet to be confirmed. SAF will be revealing the full list in the coming months.
