On April 2, the 13th Shanghai Biennale, titled “Bodies of Water,” released a partial list of participating artists for its upcoming exhibition at the Power Station of Art (PSA), slated from April 17 to July 25. The remaining artists will be revealed at the Biennale’s press preview on April 15.
Led by architect and writer Andrés Jaque, the Biennale examines the interdependent relationships between transspecies organisms, advocating for fluid forms of solidarity in addition to investigating various forms of human and non-human knowledges and intelligence. The exhibition will be staged mainly at the PSA, as well as other locations across Huangpu River and Shanghai. Among the 64 participating artists, 33 have been commissioned to create new works, including interdisciplinary artist and researcher Clare Britton, who explores time, landscapes, and collaborative practice through performance and sculpture; artist and musician Ayesha Tan Jones, who works through music and the rituals of witchcraft to present alternative, queer dystopias; filmmaker Diana Severin Nguyen, whose combines found objects and organic matter in her videos and photographs; and performance artist Itziar Okariz, whose live performance at the PSA, Ocean Breath (2021), was streamed online during the Biennale’s first phase in November 2020.
The 13th Shanghai Biennale will run for eight months for the first time, acting as an “in crescendo” project that spans three phases from November 2020 until July. The first phase, “A Wet-Run Rehearsal” (November 10–14, 2020), assembled international and Shanghai-based curators, activists, artists, and institutions for a five-day series of lectures, debates, screenings, and workshops at the PSA and online. The current phase, “An Ecosystem of Alliances” (November 15, 2020–April 16), comprise a series of in-person and online programs and workshops created in collaboration with local art institutions to put the theme “Bodies of Water” into practice. Participating institutions include New York University Shanghai, Tongji University, and Sichuan Fine Arts, among others.
