The rumors were true. It was announced yesterday that Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who officially left Gagosian Gallery earlier this week, will be partnering with David Zwirner in the United States.
Adding Kusama to their roster of artists is another major coup for Zwirner, who also managed to lure Jeff Koons away from Gagosian—often referred to as the most powerful gallery in the world. It seems there is a major fault line running through the Gagosian global empire.
Kusama will continue to be represented by Ota Fine Arts in Tokyo and Singapore as well as Victoria Miro in London.
David Zwirner is planning a solo-exhibition for the newly signed artist this coming fall, and stated in a standard press release statement, “It is truly a great honor for the gallery to be working with her now, and we all look forward to her upcoming show.”
Before the New York exhibition, Kusama’s work will continue to tour the world, hitting various cities across Asia and South America.
