Shortly after the opening of the ambitious multi-venue exhibition “Ten Million Rooms of Yearning. Sex in Hong Kong,” put on by Para Site contemporary art space in Hong Kong, on May 10, a corresponding video work “A Sex Story to a Sex Story” (2013) by Hong Kong artist Wong Wai Yim that was installed in the window of Sally Coco, a sex shop in Central, was asked to be turned off. Police received a complaint from a concerned member of the public and the two-channel video work, which features a group of people sitting face-to-face in a circle relaying their sexual experiences, was later shut off. The TV monitors showing the work faced out toward the Central-Mid-levels escalator, a walkway system that accommodates a daily traffic of over 55,000 people.

Sex Exhibition In Hong Kong Reveals Conservative Attitudes
Hong Kong Artist Adrian Wong Wins Sovereign Asian Art Prize
Hong Kong-based artist Adrian Wong was announced last Friday, May 9, as the winner of this year’s Sovereign Asian Art Prize. Previous recipients of the decade-old award have mostly engaged with more conventional mediums, therefore making Wong’s selection somewhat surprising. Wong himself, who creates conceptually rigorous sculptural works, often in reference to Hong Kong’s history, both real and imagined, remarked, “I had long thought that the prize was one that was reserved for painters—so I was honored even to be nominated. Winning the prize was not something that I had mentally prepared for.”
M+ Broadens Scope With New Acquisitions
Following the opening of the second edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, on May 15 Hong Kong’s future museum for visual culture, M+, announced a slew of new acquisitions including Asian Field (2003), by British artist, and Turner Prize-winner, Antony Gormley. Speaking about the monumental work, which was donated by a Hong Kong philanthropist who wishes to remain anonymous, executive director of M+ Lars Nittve called it, “one of the most important public artworks created in recent years in China.”
