Cheap & Cheerful: Yan Wo Tofu Shop

by Linda Da Cruz

Yan Wo specializes in soy products, such as tofu pudding and soy milk, along with popular local dishes like noodles and congee. All photos by Linda Da Cruz for ArtAsiaPacific.

What’s your latest cheap and cheerful dining spot?

人和荳品廠, also known as 人和荳品專門店 (Yan Wo Soy Specialty Shop) in Jardine’s Bazaar, Causeway Bay. I’ve been going to it for years and almost everyone knows where it is.

When is the best time to go?

It’s a drop-in kind of place if you’re feeling peckish and need a quick pick-me-up. From the menu [pictured below], you can see it specializes in tofu. You can also have lunch there as well.

What do you recommend ordering?

The soy sauce noodles (it reminds me of my school’s tuck shop); the fried tofu; the tofu dessert that you eat with red sugar; and, of course, soy milk.

They also do a fried tofu with fish paste, as well as congee cooked with pork bone, fish, and peanuts. As I don’t eat pork, I’m not sure what the latter tastes like but it must be good as everything else is!
