On March 18, the ninth edition of Art Dubai, the largest annual showcase of artists from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa, opened to the public at Madinat Jumeirah. This year the fair features 92 modern and contemporary galleries, both established and emerging, from 40 countries, and viewers have the chance to see the work of over 500 artists. The modern galleries are exhibited in Art Dubai Modern—launched last year as a platform to feature influential artists from the twentieth century, particularly during the period of the 1940s to 1980s—where they each present a solo or two-person show. The contemporary section consists of 72 galleries, of which 30 are presenting solo and two-person shows as well.
The overall theme of the 2015 edition is “innovation.” This year the Global Art Forum, the fair’s program of commissioned projects and live talks, focuses on technology and their impact on art and culture and is led by a diverse group of artists, curators, musicians, scholars and writers. Many gallery booths in Art Dubai’s contemporary section have also taken on this theme by presenting innovative multimedia exhibitions.
