In January 2019, Taiwan will see the launch of Taipei Dangdai, a new annual international art fair. Dangdai, which translates to “the present moment,” will aim to showcase the latest in contemporary art, and provide international exposure to the growing number of galleries and artists from across Asia.
The inaugural edition of the fair brings together 80 exhibitors from around the world under the roof of Taipei’s Nangang Exhibition Center. It will open under the direction of Magnus Renfrew, who previously founded Art HK – Hong Kong International Art Fair in 2007, and served as founding director of Art Basel Hong Kong from 2012 to 2014. Regarding the launch of the fair, Renfrew told ArtAsiaPacific, “We will be working to put the spotlight on the vibrant cultural scene in Taipei for international visitors. We will also be working hard to build an audience for art within Taiwan.”
The fair will comprise five sections: the main Galleries sector, for established organizations from Taiwan and abroad; the Young Galleries Program, which will highlight new galleries that have been in operation for less than eight years; Solos, presenting solo exhibitions of emerging and established artists; Salon, showcasing works of art priced under USD 8,000; and Ideas, a multidisciplinary symposium that will run alongside the main presentation.
Taipei Dangdai is supported by an advisory group of international collectors, and is presented by financial services company UBS, which holds one of the largest corporate art collections worldwide and has a long-standing history of arts patronage.
The full list of exhibitors will be announced in the last quarter of 2018.
