Oil-rich Brunei is one of Asia’s wealthiest states. Citizens enjoy high living standards, including no taxes and universal subsidized health care and education.
To prepare for the diminishment of its natural resources, the government has drafted plans to diversify the economy, and support for development of an art industry received a boost with the August 29 opening of the Brunei Young Artists Gallery at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation Complex in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. The new gallery provides space for artists to organize activities and exhibit work. The sultanate has also introduced an MFA degree from the Universiti of Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
