The multifaith, multiethnic population of Kazakhstan has a rich cultural tradition in applied arts and folk music. Fine arts were introduced under Soviet rule (1936–91), and although contemporary Kazakh artists are increasingly shown abroad, the government offers limited support.
In the cultural capital of Almaty, 2010 marked the 75th anniversary of the Kasteev State Museum of Arts (KSMA). Known for its collection of Kazakh fine art and applied art from China, Japan and India, it is undergoing a much-needed renovation and will reopen in February 2011. In London, Christie’s exhibited “Treasures of Kazakhstan” (9/1–8), with 50 pieces from the KSMA and 25 from the private collection of businessman Nurlan Smagulov.
