Yemen
Despite crippling poverty, limited rights for women and a growing fight to suppress an al-Qaeda insurgency in several provinces, Yemen continues to invest in its arts infrastructure. The country’s rich culture—the Old City of Sana’a is a UNESCO World Heritage site—was the subject of several photography exhibitions at the National Museum, including “Yemen: A Treasure Trove” (5/19), with 12 Yemeni and regional artists, and “Words of Eyes” (10/19–11/1), an eight-person show of Yemeni photography.
Since the late 1980s, the city’s primary commercial space, the artist-run Bab al-Yemen Gallery, has exhibited colorful paintings by founder Mazher Nizar and other local artists. Another prominent painter, Fuad al-Futaih, runs Gallery No. 1 and the National Centre for Arts, where he shows his own work along with other Yemeni artists.
